Chapter on Fecal Cytology Highlighted boxes featuring Key Points provide helpful tips for best conceptual understanding and diagnostic effectiveness Photomicrographs now include more comparative histology Discussions of broader uses of stains and immunocytochemistry for differential cytologic characterization Expanded chapter on Advanced Diagnostic Techniques includes more methodology and application of current tools, representing advances in both aspiration and exfoliative cytology.
A significant expansion involved the chapter on advanced techniques to include more methodology and application of some current tools such as immunochemistry, electron microscopy, flowcytometry, and molecular testing. The challenge was to accommodate the recommended changes without obfuscation of the Atlas’ in-tended objective of a practical, user-friendly cytologic compilation, which was the successful foundation of the first edition. It is our hope that, by careful editing to en-sure a clear and concise narrative, seamless integration of new and updated information into the existing text, judicious selection of new and enhanced photomicrographs, and the use of lists that highlight criteria for differential diagnosis, we have produced a second edition that will continue to find preferred residence beside the micro-scope because of its usefulness.
