Although the layout will be familiar, the authorship has changed considerably to ensure a completely fresh look has been taken at the subject areas involved. The authorship is truly international and has drawn upon clinical experts from Europe and the United States who are actively publishing original research papers in nephrology and urology. New chapters have been added, particularly in the second section on diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.
These include staging chronic kidney disease, measurement of blood pressure, cystoscopy, lithotripsy, dialysis and glomerulonephritis. Whilst some of these techniques are limited to a few highly specialist referral centres, we have taken the view that general practitioners need some knowledge of what can be achieved with these techniques so they can select appropriate cases for referral and communicate effectively with clients and the referral institutions about the cases they refer.
A major advance in our thinking on kidney disease in general, and feline kidney disease in particular, is the recognition of the importance of proteinuria as a risk factor for progression. The launch of more sensitive patient side and in-clinic quantitative tests for proteinuria over the last two to three years have also brought proteinuria more into focus for practitioners evaluating patients they suspect of having kidney disease.
